Bride of the Shadow King
About this deal
The time they spend together at the start of the book, as they get to know each other and learn the customs and cultures of their people, was my favourite part. The only down thing about this book (I guess it was my fault as I set myself for this disappointment) was that I assumed it was a stand alone and didn’t look further, so when it came to an end, I was thinking: “cool, there is more! She is such a surprise with her God's Gift, and becoming an ally and closer to a real sister to Faraine.
When she’s not writing, she’s running around after her little girl, cleaning up glitter, trying to plan healthy-ish meals, and wondering where she left her phone. With an enemies-to-lovers romance between a witch and a witch hunter, this YA fantasy series is highly addictive. Though she is the oldest daughter, Princess Faraine lives in the background, shunned from court and kept out of sight. For fans of The Bridge Kingdom and A Deal with the Elf King, this sweeping tale of love and betrayal is equal blends sweet and spice. I enjoyed the setting and scene that was sent and there were elements of a strong world building weaving throughout the book. Vor is fast becoming one of my favourite book boyfriends - he’s charming, witty, progressive, gentle and fiercely protective of his people.
There was the whole f*cked up thing with the MCF’s father king and his mistress just flaunting it in front of the queen. There is also chronic illness representation, with Faraine’s magical gift to sense others’ emotions having a cost. The riveting story will stop you from ever wanting to lay this book down, but oooooh, Ms Mercedes, what a cruel ending! One of the things I love, love LOVE is that it's written from both the heroines AND the hero's perspective. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Here I get to see a beautiful dichotomy of a medieval human surface world under attack by unicorn-riding Fae, and a majestic underground Trolde world under siege by a dark, insidious evil. I’m definitely interested enough to continue this series and see where it goes, and I hope to see further development of the story and it’s characters.
And while the “love story” and “forbidden love” elements were there, it was taking so long to get there, and then, of course, you have to through in deception/s. It’s perfect for fantasy fans looking for a touch of spice to go with the sweet in their next swoony, slow-burn romance. Closure: This ends on a cliffhanger with the next book, Vow of the Shadow King, that is not yet released. With romance, court intrigue, lies and betrayals, action, twists, a great cast of characters and beautiful worldbuilding, Bride of the Shadow King is an enticing first instalment. And vise versa when Faraine was disguised and had to travel to the under realm, feeling as though she was going to be crushed! Either way I am invested and I can not wait for the next book to see just how good this series comes together. I'd say his terrible reaction is more of a betrayal to Faraine, and worse, because his reaction is all on him. No missing or damaged pages, no tears, possible very minimal creasing, no underlining or highlighting of text, and no writing in the margins.
